Position Summary

CHEER is seeking Reading teachers for its six week Lunch and Learn summer program. The Lunch and Learn program provides daily transportation to and from the facility, breakfast and Lunch, tutoring in math and reading and recreational swim time for the participants. This year’s program is scheduled to run Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 6 weeks (June 25th to August 3) 8:30AM to 3:00PM. .  Reading classes will be held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only.

This position requires the employee to be under the supervision of the Director of Lunch and Learn and the Educational instructions Director.

Duties and responsibilities (include, but are not limited to)

  • Use of a variety of tools, including computers, and physical and pictorial models. to enhance students’ English reading skills

  • Plan daily instructional activities for all students in accordance with the approved curriculum.

  • Conduct social and emotional learning instruction as directed and in accordance with lesson plans and materials provided for that purpose.

  • Maintain order within the classroom and school with proactive classroom management and well organized learning environment

  • Use student reading assessment data to plan instruction.

  • Develop  teststo assess student learning on an ongoing basis and guide instruction strategies.

  • Maintain daily and weekly records of student performance and attendance as directed.

  • Select and use a variety of instructional materials to stimulate learning and meet the needs of all students

  • Communicates and coordinates instruction with other staff relative to student learning.

  • Stay abreast of current educational trends and best practices as these relate to classroom instruction and effective schools.

  • Participate in staff and instructor training on the evening of Monday June 11 and during the day on Saturday June 16.  

  • Conduct other assigned tasks as needed

 

Qualification

  • Candidates considered for this position must be friendly, excited to learn, organized, able to take direction and learn new things, self-motivated, and reliable

  • Maintain professional manner when interacting with campers, parents, colleagues, and subordinates.

  • A Master’s Degree (preferred) or Bachelor’s Degree in English or related field

  • Bilingual is a plus, but not required

  • Good oral communication skills, and customer service

  • Moderate level of comfort with technology

 

Compensation

This is contract position which expires on August 03, 2018. Compensation will be on a fixed fee basis of  no less than $2,000.  No medical benefits will be provided.  Individuals in this position will gain valuable experience, sharpen skills, give back to the community, and meet new people.

Takoma Park Lunch and Learn is a community based summer enrichment program for underserved youth.   It provides daily transportation to and from the facility, breakfast and lunch, tutoring in math and reading, and recreational swim time for the participants. It also offers sports, arts and crafts, and weekly local guest speakers and leadership and community service instruction to middle school and high school youth with training and volunteer opportunities.
