CHEER is an innovative and growing community-based nonprofit serving the Long
Branch/Takoma Park community. We act as a facilitator and a catalyst in generating
community driven activities to fulfill community defined goals
 

Description of Activities
The volunteers serve all CHEER programs and activities. Translators are needed to translate
documents written in English into Spanish and Amharic, and occasionally French
Documents needing translation provide information on health and wellness, community
events, and announcements about opportunities to support CHEER programs and services
Events needing interpreters are community events and community meetings. Presentations
may be in English or Spanish; many people are not bilingual or use different languages
 

Impact of Events Coordinator
Translating documents increases CHEER’s ability to communicate more broadly to the diverse
local community. Interpreting at events and meetings increases CHEER’s ability to facilitate
dialog and better relations among community members
 

Background/Experience Needed
Translators: Ability to translate documents written in English into Spanish and Amharic,
sometimes French, idioms understood by people in the local community, e.g., idioms
commonly used in Central American countries. Ability to meet quick turnaround requests
Interpreters: Ability to interpret quickly and accurately from English to Spanish/Amharic AND
from Spanish/Amharic to English which allows meetings to achieve goals in a timely manner,
sometimes in crowded or spaces which challenge easy interpretation. Ability to interpret for
outside events where noise and distractions increase challenges to clear communication
Number of Volunteers Needed, Time Commitment, Volunteer Location
At least one translator and one interpreter are needed. Hours are variable depending on how
many documents and meetings are needed in a week. Translations can be done at home,
anytime, or in the CHEER office, during the day. Interpretations are done, usually weekday
mornings or evenings, or weekend days, when events and meetings occur
