Organization Summary​

CHEER is a community-based nonprofit serving the Long Branch/ Takoma Park community. Its mission is to provide people with the knowledge and ability to create healthy, thriving communities, especially in the neighborhoods that bear the greatest burden of socio-economic inequity. We act as a facilitator and a catalyst in generating community driven activities to fulfill community defined goals for health, housing, community development, and youth development. CHEER is the fiscal agent for Lunch and Learn.​
 

Takoma Park Lunch and Learn is a community-based summer enrichment program for underserved youth. It provides daily transportation to and from the facility, breakfast and lunch, instruction in math and reading,and recreational swim time for the participants. It also offers sports, arts and crafts, and weekly local guest speakers and leadership and community service instruction to middle school and high school youth with training and volunteer opportunities.

Position Summary

We are seeking to hire Junior Swim Instructors for our 2019 Lunch & Learn Summer Camp. We are looking for someone with strong work ethic,a great attitude, dedication, and experience teaching children and teenagers how to swim. The Junior Swim Instructor is responsible for assisting the Senior Lead Instructor in all aspects of the swimming component of our camp. The Junior Swim Instructor will help support the planning, organizing, and teaching of students in daily swim classes. This position requires the ability to teach fundamental swimming skills to all age and ability levels, as well as manage small groups of students.

 

This is a wonderful opportunity to impact the lives of young people by providing a safe and nurturing environment that encourages children’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual development. The Lunch and Learn camp will operate 8:30 am to 3 pm 5 days a week, Monday – Friday for six weeks during the summer (June 24 to August 2). This paid position requires approximately 15 hrs per week, Monday- Thursday for four weeks, specifically the Week of July 3 (no camp on July 4) through the Week of July 29. Swim Lesson Classes will take place from 12pm-2pm on Monday-Thursday. However, the Junior Swim Instructors are required to arrive prior to the classes and stay after for approximately 3.5 hours per day. All staff are required to attend one ½ day of orientation and training prior to the beginning of camp.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Under the supervision of the Senior Swim instructor, implement swim lesson classes.

  • Provide a fun and enjoyable environment for young people to learn and strengthen their swimming abilities.

  • Assist in evaluating camper’s level of swimming, i.e., non-swimmer, beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

  • Teach basic swimming techniques, such as the proper positioning of the head, arms, and legs, how to hold your breath under water, and methods to staying safe while swimming.

  • Support Senior Swim Instructor in maintaining daily and weekly records, including attendance.

  • Consistently communicate with Director and Assistant Director.

  • Provide administrative support as need be.

  • Responsible for maintaining safety and appropriate protocols at all times.

  • Responsible for ensuring that the pool area is clean, organized, and free of liter prior to class and following class.

  • Provide appropriate supervision and implement appropriate positive youth development behavioral management techniques.

  • Submit Lunch & Learn evaluations at the close of Lunch & Learn

  • Implement a youth development approach, characterized by respectful interactions with students, youth participation and input, and a consideration of youth developmental needs when addressing discipline.

  • Reinforce Lunch & Learn philosophies and positive culture with all students.

  • Maintain professional manner when interacting with campers,parents,colleagues, and Lunch & Learn Staff.

Qualifications

  • Upon hire, First Aid and CPR Certification

  • Strong Swimming Skills

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of practices, procedures, activities, and programs as they relate to youth/child swim practices

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.

  • Must be able to pass a background checkck

 

Compensation

A Stipend of $900.00 will be provided in two installments.
