Position Summary

CHEER is seeking a Youth Camp Director for a summer program for children and youth in grades 1 through 12.  The program includes youth enrichment activities for children in grades 1 through 5 and a service learning summer camp for youth entering grades 6 to 12. The camp will operate 8:30 am to 3 pm 5 days a week, Monday – Friday for six weeks during the summer (June 29 to August 7). This camp will be in a new site at Clifton Park Baptist Church with many new youth participants. This position requires prior camp or youth program management experience, good organizational and supervisory skills, a strong knowledge of and commitment to positive youth development practices and a passion for creating high quality experiences for youth.  This position reports directly to the Executive Director of CHEER.

​This position is seasonal and requires a time commitment of approximately 4-8 hours per week between March and June, with increased hours during the summer program.

 

Key Duties and responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

Camp Management

  • Provide leadership, support with planning, and implementation of Camp Piney Branch.

  • Collaborate with members of the Executive Board to:

    • Implement recruitment efforts and registration.

    • Finalize programmatic components of Camp.

    • Hire and onboard camp staff, SYEP interns, and volunteers.

  • Provide organizational and programmatic support at camp as necessary.

  • Troubleshoot issues related to camp logistics, campers, staff, and general emergencies.

  • Maintain consistent communication with community partners and CHEER Executive Team.

  • Model and maintain a positive, youth-focused attitude and culture at all times.

  • Facilitate large-group meetings of 50 to 100 students and adults.

  • Interact with representatives of Clifton Park Baptist Church in relation to use of facilities and to build Camp – Church partnership.

 

Staff and Volunteer Management

  • Directly manage camp staff, interns, and volunteers.

  • Maintain a positive team culture that includes campers, families, camp based staff, and volunteers.

  • Providing ongoing supervisory support and feedback to staff, interns, and volunteers.

  • Manage staff daily attendance and staff weekly deliverables.

  • Support and supervise camp staff in the areas of organization, implementation, decision-making, and trouble-shooting.

 

Evaluation/Data

  • Maintain record keeping including attendance tracking, pre/post test results, student camp feedback, and other required data.

  • Pre/Post Test

    • Support teachers in administering the pre/post test.

    • Oversee the collection and aggregation of tests data

  • Youth End of Camp Evaluations

    • Support teachers in administering the Youth End of Camp Feedback Form.

    • Oversee the collection and aggregation of data points

  • Staff End of Camp Evaluations/Tasks

    • Oversee staff in completing all end of summer tasks

    • Oversee staff in completing all required evaluations and tasks.

  • Provide ongoing evaluation of camp operations through our evaluation system.

 

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Commitment to the mission, work, and youth- centered attitude of Piney Branch Camp

  • Associate/ Bachelor’s degree OR minimum of two years experience working directly with summer camp required

  • Experience directly managing staff and volunteers

  • Strong skills in planning, organizing, attention to detail, written and oral communication

  • Strong skills in technology and data analysis

  • Spanish language skills a plus

  • Good people skills, (listening, empathy, and ability to motivate)

  • Ability to work well in complex and challenging circumstances

Compensation

Organization Summary

CHEER is a community-based nonprofit serving the Long Branch/ Takoma Park community. Its mission is to provide people with the knowledge and ability to create healthy, thriving communities, especially in the neighborhoods that bear the greatest burden of socio-economic inequity. We act as a facilitator and a catalyst in generating community driven activities to fulfill community defined goals for health, housing, community development, and youth development. CHEER is a partner with the YMCA in the Long Branch Collective Action for Youth, and has sponsored and facilitated several prior youth programs.​

Camp Piney Branch is a community-based summer enrichment program for underserved youth.  It will be held at and in partnership with Clifton Park Baptist Church in Silver Spring. It provides breakfast and lunch, instruction and tutoring in math and reading, and recreational swim time for the participants. It also offers sports, arts and crafts, and weekly local guest speakers and leadership and community service instruction to middle school and high school youth with training and volunteer opportunities.
