Program Overview

Camp Piney Branch is a community-based summer enrichment program for youth in the Long Branch community in Montgomery County. Due to COVID19 restrictions, the camp will offer hands-on learning experiences for rising 2nd through high school students through an online platform as well as opportunities for small group outdoor exploration and recreation activities using appropriate social distancing and safety protocols.  The camp provides lunch for pick up prior to daily recreation activities at Clifton Baptist Church, instruction in STEM and other themed and age-appropriate activities included in the national statewide organization summer guide:  http://www.afterschoolga.org/resources/summeractivityguide/ in addition to community service opportunities for middle school and high school youth.

 

Sponsoring Organization Summary:

CHEER is a community-based nonprofit serving the Long Branch/ Takoma Park community. Its mission is to provide people with the knowledge and ability to create healthy, thriving communities, especially in the neighborhoods that bear the greatest burden of socio-economic inequity. We act as a facilitator and a catalyst in generating community driven activities to fulfill community defined goals for health, housing, community development, and youth development.

 

CHEER is the fiscal agent for Camp Piney Branch, with major funding from the Montgomery County Government Community Grants program.

 

Position Summary:

We are seeking to hire (4) camp counselors to provide daily support of online instruction and in-person recreation activities for each of 4 designated age groups (rising 2nd and 3rd, 4th and 5th, middle school and high school).  Each counselor will be paired with a certified teacher assigned the same age group.

 

Camp Piney Branch will operate from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm 5 days a week, Monday – Friday for six weeks during the summer (July 13th through August 21st), in addition to two five-hour pre-camp preparation days on July 9th and 10th.  

 

Duties and responsibilities              

 

  • Assist assigned instructor with both online hands-on and in-person recreation activities for small groups (group size dependent on most recent COVID19 county guidelines) in local parks near New Hampshire Estates Elementary and Park Montgomery Apartments in Silver Spring for 90 minutes daily.

  • Provide assistance and support to all instructors and staff

  • Support staff in maintaining daily and weekly student records and meeting grant requirements

  • Provide appropriate supervision using positive youth development behavioral management techniques and respectful interactions with youth, fellow staff members and parents

  • Adhere to policies and procedures as outlined in the Camp Piney Branch staff handbook.

  • Other Duties as assigned

 

Requirements:

  • Ability to work as a member of a team.

  • Experience working with children from diverse cultures preferred

  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Experience working with online learning systems preferred

  • Must have reliable home access to internet           

 

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • High school diploma required

  • A minimum of one year part or full-time documented work experience with school-aged children strongly preferred.

  • Willingness to demonstrate flexibility related to program activities offered in order to address county health and safety requirements

           

Compensation

A stipend of $2,880 will be provided in two installments.
