Organization Summary

CHEER is a community-based nonprofit serving the Long Branch/ Takoma Park community. Its mission is to provide people with the knowledge and ability to create healthy, thriving communities, especially in the neighborhoods that bear the greatest burden of socio-economic inequity. We act as a facilitator and a catalyst in generating community driven activities to fulfill community defined goals for health, housing, community development, and youth development. CHEER is the fiscal agent for Lunch and Learn.​
 

Takoma Park Lunch and Learn is a community-based summer enrichment program for underserved youth. It provides daily transportation to and from the facility, breakfast and lunch, instruction in math and reading, and recreational swim time for the participants. It also offers sports, arts and crafts, and weekly local guest speakers and leadership and community service instruction to middle school and high school youth with training and volunteer opportunities.

 

Position Summary

We are seeking to fill various camp counselor positions for our 2019 Lunch & Learn Summer Camp. We are looking for counselors with strong work ethic, great attitude, dedication, and a desire to work with elementary children (1st-5th grade) and/or middle-high school age students.

We are hiring the following camp counselor positions:

 

  • Grade Level Counselor:  As the grade level camp counselor you will travel with an assigned grade (class) throughout the day. In the morning, you will support your students in their Reading and Math class under the supervision of their Reading/Math teacher. In the classroom, your responsibilities/tasks could range from working one on one with students struggling academically, leading a small group in an academic activity, assisting the teacher in instruction. In the afternoon, you will continue to travel with your class and provide support as your class travels to lunch, to their instructor-led swim class, enrichment activities(station) in the afternoon. You may also be asked to supervise on-site and off-site field trips.

  • Junior Camp Counselors: This role is for applicants with little to no experience as a camp counselor. In this role, you will work with a group of counselors to provide administrative, logistical, and supervisory support to the Directors of the Camp as well as to the grade level counselors. As an administrative camp counselor, you complete administrative-related task in the morning while the students are in the classroom In the afternoon, you will help lead an enrichment activity and/or engaging opportunity for the students in the camp under the supervision of a CHEER staff member. In the afternoon, you will also be asked to provide administrative support as deemed necessary. You may also be asked to attend field trips off-site.
     

  • Middle- High School Camp Counselors: We are looking for counselors with strong work ethic, great attitude, dedication, and a desire to work with either middle or high school students. As the middle or high school camp counselor you will travel with your students throughout the day. In the morning, you will support your students in their academic or enrichment activity under the supervision of the Service Learning Coordinator and enrichment activity leaders. During this time, your responsibilities/tasks could range from working one on one with students struggling, leading a small group, assisting the teacher/ enrichment activity leaders. In the afternoon, you will continue to travel with your class and provide support as your class travels to lunch, to their once a week instructor-led swim class, enrichment activities, service learning hours, certification classes. You may also be asked to supervise on-site and off-site field trips.

Schedule Requirements

The Lunch and Learn camp will operate 8:30 am to 3 pm 5 days a week, Monday – Friday for six weeks during the summer (June 24 to August 2). The paid position requires 35 hrs per week for the duration of the camp. All counselors are required to attend one ½ day of orientation and training prior to the beginning of camp as well as the Kick off Night for families and camp participants.

Duties and responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):       

  • Provide academic, behavioral, social support to all camp participants.

  • Help coordinate and plan engaging and meaningful opportunities for camp participants.

  • Communicate and coordinate instruction with staff relative to student learning and development.

  • Provide assistance and support to all teachers and staff.

  • Communicate and coordinate instruction with staff relative to student learning.

  • Support staff in maintaining daily and weekly student records.

  • Support staff in administering Pre Test/ Post Test at the beginning and end of Lunch & Learn.

  • Provide appropriate supervision and implement appropriate positive youth development behavioral management techniques. This includes outdoor activities and providing support to our swim instructors during the instructor-led swim class.

  • Complete Lunch & Learn counselor evaluations at the close of Lunch & Learn

  • Implement a youth development approach, characterized by respectful interactions with students, youth participation and input, and a consideration of youth developmental needs when addressing discipline.

  • Reinforce Lunch & Learn philosophies and positive culture with all students.

  • Maintain professional manner when interacting with campers,parents,colleagues, and Lunch & Learn Staff.

   

Qualifications       

  • Camp Counselors:

    • Must be 18 years of age

    • High school diploma required

    • A minimum of one year of documented professional teaching experience with young children strongly preferred.

    • Must be able to pass a background check

  • Junior Camp Counselors:

    • Must be 16 years of age

    • A minimum of one year of documented professional teaching experience with young children strongly preferred.

    • Must be able to pass a background check

   

Compensation

  • Counselors: A Stipend of $2,520.00 will be provided in installments

  • Junior Counselors: A Stipend of $2,000.00 will be provided in installments

  • Swim instructors: A stipend of $900-$1,200.00 (depending on experience)  will be provided in installments
