Position Summary

We are seeking experienced elementary teachers for our 2019 Lunch & Learn Camp. The Lunch and Learn camp will operate 8:30 am to 3:00 pm five days a week, Monday – Friday for six weeks during the summer (June 24 to August 2). This paid position requires 12 hours per week for the duration of the camp; this position requires only morning hours Monday through Thursday. Within those 12 hours, teachers will be paid for 10.0 hrs of instructional time and paid for 2.0 hrs of planning time.Teachers are required to attend one day of orientation/training prior to the beginning of camp and attend our Kick off Night with families prior to the start of camp. Teachers will be responsible for preparing and teaching Reading and/or Math lessons to designated grade(s) (1st- 5th graders).

 

Organization Summary

CHEER is a community-based nonprofit serving the Long Branch/ Takoma Park community. Its mission is to provide people with the knowledge and ability to create healthy, thriving communities, especially in the neighborhoods that bear the greatest burden of socio-economic inequity. We act as a facilitator and a catalyst in generating community driven activities to fulfill community defined goals for health, housing, community development, and youth development. CHEER is the fiscal agent for Lunch and Learn.​
 

Takoma Park Lunch and Learn is a community-based summer enrichment program for underserved youth. It provides daily transportation to and from the facility, breakfast and lunch, instruction in math and reading,and recreational swim time for the participants. It also offers sports, arts and crafts, and weekly local guest speakers and leadership and community service instruction to middle school and high school youth with training and volunteer opportunities.

 

Duties and responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):       

  • Prepare and execute engaging daily lesson plans, assignments and activities.

  • Adapt lesson plans to suit diverse student needs while assessing and supporting student strengths.

  • Select and use a variety of instructional materials to stimulate learning and meet the needs of all students.

  • Communicate and coordinate instruction with other staff relative to student learning.

  • Maintains daily and weekly records of student performance and attendance.

  • Implement a positive youth development approach, characterized by respectful interactions with students.

  • Reinforce Lunch & Learn philosophies and positive culture with all students.

  • Administer Pre Test/ Post Test at the beginning and end of Lunch & Learn.

  • Submit Lunch & Learn evaluations at the close of Lunch & Learn.

  • Maintain professional manner when interacting with campers, parents, colleagues, and Lunch & Learn Staff.

  • Sign and abide by Engagement Contract and Code & Conduct

   

Qualifications       

  • Bachelor's Degree or a related-experience teaching children

  • Commitment to the mission and work of CHEER: Lunch & Learn

  • Classroom teaching experience with elementary-aged students strongly preferred

  • Ability to effectively implement classroom management strategies,routines, and procedures.

  • Must be energetic, flexible, and culturally sensitive with a positive youth development approach

  • Strong oral and written communication skills required   

Compensation

Stipend of $2,016 will be provided.
